Call for applications for the Special Access and Admission Competition for International Students 2017/2018
2nd CALL – Notice Nº 24/R/2017
Applications are open for the Special Access and Admission Competition for International Students for the first cycles of studies of the University of Madeira, for the academic year of 2017/2018.

2. Application deadline:
1st Call: Closed application;
2nd Call: March 6 to March 27, 2017;
3rd Call: Cancelled.
3.1 Students who do not have Portuguese nationality.
3.2 Students who are not eligible:
a. Nationals of a Member State of the European Union;
b. Those who, not being nationals of a Member State of the European Union, have been legally residing in Portugal for more than two years, uninterrupted , on August 31 of the year they intend to apply for higher education, as well as children legally living with them;
c. Those requiring admission into higher education through special competitions regulated by Decree-Law no. 393-A/99, of October 2, amended by Decree-Law no. 272/2009 of 1 October;
d. Those who are students of a foreign higher education institution, attending the University of Madeira for a short term period, under an international mobility program.
4. Admission requirements:
4.1 Those established in the Special Access and Admission Competition regulated by Decree- Law no. 36/2014 and by the Regulation for Special Access and International Student Status of the University of Madeira.
4.2 Those who meet the following requirements may apply for enrolment and registration in the first cycles of studies:
a.Holders of a qualification obtained in a country in which that qualification entitles them the right to apply and be admitted to higher education in that country;
b.Holders of a Portuguese secondary education diploma or legally equivalent qualification.
4.3 The validation of the qualification referred to in subparagraph a) of paragraph 4.2 shall be made by the competent authority of the country in which it was obtained.
4.4 The qualification equivalence referred to in subparagraph b) of paragraph 4.2 is defined by Ordinance no. 224/2006, of 8 March and by Ordinance no. 699/2006 of 12 July.
4.5 The conditions of entry, set out in the regulations, include specifically and necessarily the:
a.Verification of the specific academic qualification to enter the cycle of studies;
b.Verification of the proficiency in the language in which the cycle of studies will be taught;
c.Verification of the prerequisites that have been established for the cycle of studies.
4.6 The verification of the conditions specified in subparagraphs a) and b) of the previous paragraph, shall be carried out through documentary evidence to be submitted by the applicant, on application, or by conducting written tests, possibly supplemented by oral examinations, conducted by the University of Madeira for that purpose.
4.7 Candidates from countries with an official language equal to the language in which the cycle of studies will be taught, are exempt from the presentation of documentary evidence of the proficiency of the language in question.
5. Selection and ranking criteria:
5.1The ordering of candidates for each cycle of studies is taken in descending order. The final grade is given on a scale 0-20.
5.2 Only candidates who obtain the minimum grade established for each cycle of studies in the National Contest for Access to Higher Education can be admitted.
5.3 The order of candidates is waived if the number of candidates placed is less than or equal to the number of vacancies.
5.4 The final grade is obtained by the simple arithmetic average of the results obtained, as applicable:
a. In the final exams of the Portuguese education system corresponding to the entrance examinations for holders of Portuguese secondary school or holders of foreign secondary schools who have taken those examinations as self-proposed candidates;
b. In equivalent examinations taken abroad;
c. In secondary education subjects corresponding to the ones set as admission examinations for the cycles of studies;
d. In courses taken abroad considered homologous to the entrance examinations for the cycle of studies in question, according to the annual resolution of the National Commission on Higher Education with respect to Article 20-A of Decree-Law No. 296-A/98, of September 25, or others that the jury referred to in Article 5 considers scientifically accepted as the field of access and admission to the intended cycle of studies;
e. In examinations conducted by the University of Madeira and that are referred to in item v) of subparagraph d) of paragraph 1 of article 4 of the regulation of this competition.

10. Annual tuition fee: € 4,000, to be paid in accordance with the Tuition Fees’ Regulation in force.

Upon enrolment, students accept and agree to the terms governing the degree they are applying, including the payment of the annual tuition fee, in accordance with the regulations of the University of Madeira, as stipulated in the regulations of the University of Madeira, available at http://uaa.uma.pt. We ask candidates to read these regulations carefully.
The University of Madeira provides an Intensive Portuguese Language and Cultural Course aimed at students that are placed under the International Student Status. The tuition fee is € 3,000 and will take place between April and August 2017.
