In Portugal, a vast majority of stores accept, in addition to cash payments, credit or debit card payments (paying bills: water, electricity, gas, telecommunications, buying theatre tickets amongst others). Transactions can be made at any ATM, regardless of the bank in which you have an account, without any extra fees charged. If you decide to open a bank account, you can go to any branch (called “balcão” in Portugal), preferably in the vicinity of the University campus, or the residence. To open a bank account, you’ll need:
– Tax Identification Number (NIF)
– Proof of residence;
– Proof of enrolment and
– Proof of income during your stay (e.g. grant/scholarship).
